Archeoclub of Venice: who we are

Venice Office of Archeoclub d’Italia, a national non-profit association dedicated to the preservation of cultural property. Archeoclub head office is in Rome but the association has local chapters in many cities: the Venice Office, founded in 1985 by a group of fellows among which are professor Riziero Giunti and professor Gerolamo Fazzini, is dedicated to Luigi Conton, pioneer of lagoon archeology.

In these years Archeoclub has set in motion in Venice many activities to protect and enhance the Venitian historical and cultural legacy, whith a special reference to Lagoon territory. They aim to popularize, point out and denounce aspects, subjects and examples of archeology, art and architecture often considered “minor” such as wells, portals, ceramics remains, handcraft works, fortifications…

Since 1987 Archeoclub’s contribution is determinant to the rebirth of the Island of Lazzaretto Nuovo in the Northern Part of the Lagoon of Venice: there it organizes international archaeological summer camps, directed in particular at young people, in collaboration with the “Ekos Club” –the association in charge of the island-, with Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici, per il Paesaggio e per il Patrimonio storico, artistico ed etno-antropologico di Venezia e Laguna (Monument and Fine Arts Office, the authority for enviromental, historical, artistic and ethno-anthropologic legacy of Venice and its Lagoon), and Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Regione Veneto (Veneto’s archaeological commission).

Since the early Nineties it publishes the periodic information magazine ArcheoVenezia. This magazine treats concisely news and topics related to preservation of cultural property.

Since 1992 the Archeoclub Venice Office is registred in the Registro Regionale Veneto del Volontariato, the official list of Regione Veneto Volunteers Associations (L. 266/1991 – iscr. 12.01.93, VE 0127). As registred member, it stipulated agreements about services in some important Venetian museums such as Museo della Ceramica alla Cà d’Oro and Sezione archeologica del Museo di Torcello, and about collaborations with Querini Stampalia Foundation and Fondazione Ugo e Olga Levi. A further agreement has been stipulated with Archivio di Stato di Venezia: a group of Archeoclub fellows will carrie out an important voluntary work of systematization and catalouging of the materials to improve some of the services offered to the public by this Institution which in the ex-friary of Frari preserves Serenissima’s documents from the beginning of XIX century.
